Glossary DEF
Directories - A Web search tool compiled manually by human editors. Once websites are submitted with information such as a title and description, they are assessed by an editor and, if deemed suitable for addition, will be listed under one or more subject categories.
Directories can also refer to levels in a file system. You may refer to them as “folders”.
DMOZ (open directory project) - A directory run by volunteers under the Open Directory project, www.dmoz.org
Doorway page - Considered by most search engines as a spam tactic, doorway pages are designed to be seen and ranked highly on a particular search engine.
DTD tag (Doctype tag) - The DTD is referred to in the source code of the Web page and specifies the language (HTML, XHTML, etc.) used in the page.
Duplicate content - Duplicate content is created when the content of a Web page or website is similar to or the same as that of another site or page. While often this is not done on purpose, the search engines consider it spam and may penalize the site(s).
Dynamic URL -The address of a Web page that depends on variables provided to the server that delivers it. A dynamic URL normally looks disorganized and confusing (www.aosoft.net/fnn92j20/f29am/id=21 http://www.aosoft.net/fnn92j20/f29am/id=21) A static URL normally looks very clean and simple (e.g. www.aosoft.net/web-design <http://www.aosoft.net/web-design>).
Email marketing - The practice of sending sales letters or customer newsletters by email to a targeted list of recipients. Also known as transactional email.
FFA (free for all sites) - Sites that sell one-line classified ads to unrelated advertisers. Rather than an increase in online traffic to your website, the only real result will probably be an increase in spam. Google and other search engines are penalizing these sites because they are of little or no value to visitors.
